Early September Update, News and Publications

9/1/2017

Late August marks the return to the college classroom and, for me, that means spreading the mind thin teaching courses in philosophical anthropology, prosody, and aesthetics.  But I have been active at the writer's desk even as my work begins to receive some critical attention, and so here is a list of recent publications and news to share with readers.  Click the corresponding pictures to read more about each item.

National Review has published James E Person, Jr.'s generous review of my new book, The Vision of the Soul: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty in the Western Tradition.

America included my poem "On a Discharged Firework" in a recent issue.

I made my debut in the Claremont Review of Books, with a look at Belle Turnbull, in "Forgotten Master?"

The new issue of The Weekly Standard includes my review of new books by the poets Catherine Chandler and Timothy Murphy.  Readers may recall I published a longer essay on Chandler this summer, and a similar treatment of Murphy's career will appear in the coming months.

Last, but the very opposite of least, I have just been informed that I have been awarded the 2017 Hiett Prize in the Humanities by the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture.  What a wonderful, generous, and also humbling, recognition of my efforts to revive humane learning, and the life of the arts and the spirit in our scattered times.
