Modern Age, Modern Poetry, and Me

The new issue of Modern Age magazine is out, the first under the editorship of Peter Augustine Lawler.  As some readers may already be aware, I have been appointed the new editor of Modern Age, succeeding the great David Middleton.  My chief hope is to continue David's work in publishing the best of contemporary poets.  But I will do so by trying to make as explicit as possible the principles that guide both our poetic tradition and my own editorial judgment -- this so as to help make the contemporary reader conscious of what poetry does, why it does it, and why anyone should care in the first place.  My editorial statement, "Poetry in the Modern Age" will serve, I hope, as an introductory reflection on the practice of poetry and as a first act toward the renewal of the artform in our time.
