Another Friday in Lent brings us to the Sixth Station, "Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus." First published in First Things, and now appearing in revised form with an illustration by Daniel Mitsui, this is my personal favorite of the whole sequence. Why? For the sake of these lines:
Think of Bouguereau’s painted saints,
Their aureoles like pewter plates
